Considering an Arlington High Intern?
What internship hosts should know:
The internship experience begins before students show up for their first day at the host site: they are vetted by AHS personnel based on the initiative they show in establishing and managing initial contacts with hosts. Students also participate in important orientation activities before starting their internships at your worksite.
Internship hosts have the opportunity to impact the youth of the community by shaping interns’ work engagement and contributions to society – close to home and beyond the borders of Arlington. As HS upperclassman, interns are at just the age when they are most apt to listen to thoughtful and helpful adults, in the world outside of school. Internship hosts can shepherd students though what may be their first opportunity for authentic collaboration in real-life projects, can guide them in careful and precise work, and can provide parameters for taking initiative and communicating as a professional. Moreover, they help interns identify and carry out a project that will serve the needs of the host site

Intern responsibilities:
Supervisor responsibilities (some flexibility is possible – just ask):
- Demonstrate motivation and responsibility in order to be selected as an Intern.
- Attend required Internship orientation at AHS.
- Provide their own transportation to the worksite.
- Work 5 hrs./week at the worksite; we understand that in some cases 8 hrs. is required.
- Dress in conservative “business casual,” unless worksite requires formal dress.
- Attend sessions with the AHS Internship Director on a regular basis to discuss policy, procedure, work at the site, etc.
- In addition to duties at the worksite, develop a project approved by the on-site intern supervisor that is of use to host organization. Interns are required to present a substantial project end product at the AHS Internship Expo, in early spring.
Supervisor responsibilities (some flexibility is possible – just ask):
- If the Intern works more than 5 hours per week you may pay for the extra hours.
- Prepare a practical orientation for the intern on his or her first day of work with you. You may ask for guidance about this from the AHS Internship Director. A Day 1 orientation might include information about the layout of the work-site, an organizational chart, your expectations about interacting with the intern (e.g., communication, taking initiative, requesting support, providing feedback).
- During the fall academic semester, participate in one meeting at the worksite with the Internship Director
- Review and approve the Intern’s project, and offer occasional guidance to ensure its usefulness to your organization and completion.
- Complete a brief online form every 4-6 weeks about the Intern’s performance (form is checkboxes with optional comments – takes 5-10 mins. to complete).
- Please remember the AHS intern is a teen – wonderful and responsible – and sometimes in need of more encouragement and supervision than an adult.
- Complete a brief online form within 2 weeks after the end of the internship about your experiences and satisfaction as an Internship Host (takes about 10 minutes to complete).
