Internship = Learning Adventure Outside the School Walls
Is your son or daughter considering an internship? For many students this is the perfect opportunity to apply school learning, build skills and etiquette and broaden their experience in a real-world work environment. Students doing internships have discovered new talents they did not know they had, new passion that might translate into college majors and careers, and new self-confidence from grappling with and succeeding at unexpected workplace challenges. An internship is a true learning adventure outside the school walls, guided by caring adults from AHS as well as from the host site. Everyone wants the interns to succeed. For students not heading to college right after high school, an internship can provide key experience to get the most out of employment or gap year activities. So send them our way! We would love to have your son or daughter participate in Internship Program at AHS.
The AHS Internship program recently worked with an external consultant on a program review, including researching other internship programs in other districts. We have refined the AHS Internship Program goals, increased internship site options, organized a calendar of key dates, and more clearly delineated for students the assignments and participation hours required to gain Honors level credits for internship completion. We also developed this website which future AHS interns will run and contribute to. Also, we are offering a fun, interactive orientation for new interns early this fall to set the stage for an internship experience that is rigorous yet engaging, well-organized and well-coordinated and that responds to the individual experiences of each student.
The AHS Internship Program invites questions and input from you and any parent of an AHS student, about the current program or in future years, your son’s or daughter’s specific internship, ideas for new host sites and other areas of program development. Should you have any questions or ideas before, during or after the start of the Fall 2016 Internship Program, please do not hesitate to contact Melanie Konstandakis-Schwartz, Program Director at [email protected]
Internship Sites for 2016-17
Our History
Fall 2016 is the fifth year of the Arlington High School Internship Program, and the second year under the direction of Melanie Konstandakis-Schwartz. This AHS program has been growing by leaps and bounds, doubling in the past year along. More than 40 students will be interning this fall at over 30 different locations in Arlington and the Boston area. Internship hosts are ready and willing to guide your son or daughter in the workplace and provide them opportunities for developing their own projects that will contribute to the work site. No longer a program only for the most elite students, we can now offer a broader range of students the opportunity to explore their interests and discover their talents in a real world setting
